127. A Cat in Kyoto Strolls Past

Description

One frosty cold day in January, I visited one of the most famous sightseeing spots on the eastern side of Kyoto— Sannei Zaka, stone steps at the foot of Kiyomizu Temple, which connect to other temples and shrines. When I was standing at the bottom of the steps and looking up at the beautiful traditional Japanese buildings and the bare branches of a cherry tree against the morning sky, a small tortoiseshell cat suddenly appeared from an old house and walked across the steps composedly. For that moment, it was just me alone in Kyoto happening upon a cat doing his daily patrol of the neighborhood.
